Prompto is a browser extension that rewrites the prompt you type into an AI chat (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) before you send it. This policy explains exactly what data the extension handles and where it goes. Plain language, no surprises.
What happens when you optimize a prompt
When you press the optimize hotkey (default Ctrl+Enter) in a supported AI site:
- The extension reads the text currently in that site's input box.
- It sends that text to the Prompto backend over HTTPS, with your chosen optimization style, your license key (or the built-in free-tier token), and an anonymous install id used only to count free-tier usage.
- The backend forwards the text to our AI model provider (Moonshot AI / Kimi) to generate the optimized version, and returns it to the extension.
- The optimized text is shown to you to review and edit, then placed in the input box when you choose to send it.
The extension only reads your input text at the moment you trigger the hotkey — it does not monitor or log your typing, your conversations, or anything else on the page.
What we collect
- Prompt text you choose to optimize — sent to our backend and to Moonshot AI solely to produce the optimized prompt. We do not use it to train models and do not retain it beyond what is needed to serve and debug the request.
- An anonymous install id — a random identifier generated in your browser to meter free-tier daily usage. It is not linked to your name, email, or browsing history.
- Your license key (Pro users) — sent with each request to authorize it. Pro keys are issued and processed by our payment provider, Gumroad.
- Your settings (style, hotkey, toggles, license key) — stored locally
in your browser via
chrome.storage.local. They never leave your device except the license key, which is sent to authorize your requests.
What we do NOT do
- We do not sell or rent your data.
- We do not use your prompts for advertising or model training.
- We do not read pages other than the supported AI sites, and only the input text when you trigger optimization.
- We do not run analytics or tracking inside the extension.
Third parties
- Moonshot AI (Kimi) processes prompt text to generate optimizations. See moonshot.ai.
- Gumroad processes Pro purchases and issues license keys. See gumroad.com/privacy.
- Hosting/infrastructure for the backend may process requests in transit.
Your choices
- Disable the extension any time from its popup or
chrome://extensions. - Remove the extension to delete all locally stored settings and the install id.
